Title: The law regarding...
Lolita Protestor - April 13, 2008 03:33 PM (GMT)
Does anyone know if we require a permit or some sort of license to post pamphlets through the letter boxes of local houses and streets in the area close to this new proposed site warning the local people of the presence of Scientology?
anon1812 - April 13, 2008 03:35 PM (GMT)
I'd be surprised if we do... the amount of crap I get through my letterbox.
anonuk323 - April 13, 2008 03:35 PM (GMT)
Not as far as I'm aware, and it doesn't seem to stop the leafletters around here if there are any.
anonsrus - April 13, 2008 03:35 PM (GMT)
I've letterbox-mailed before with political flyers without a licence. It should be fine.
Falco - April 13, 2008 03:35 PM (GMT)
I don't think we do for this actually, I vaguely recall seeing a mention of this when trying to find out Street Distribution laws for the leaflets.
Lolita Protestor - April 13, 2008 03:38 PM (GMT)
Then why not get two or three groups or masked leafletters on the trail posting honest to goodness information on Scientology, the proposed HQ and some contact details on them?
:)

I wouldn't have thought so. We used to get flyers of all descriptions posted through the door. The local church, window-cleaner requests, tree pruner requests, landscape gardeners, block paving, Domino's pizza...the list goes on.
My reasoning behind my assumption is that, given the many areas that Domino's pizza covers throughout the country (bearing in mind each one is a franchise) , it would be far too much hassle to get a permit for every council area.

I don't really know that much about this apart from that there are plans to open a new Scifag building somewhere, otherwise I'd have drafted an email myself for approval. I need to lurk moar. :ph43r:
BTW, masked leafletters is a big no-no. Imagine Mrs Miggins looking out of the front window to see a bloke/blokette in a mask coming up the path?! Old Bill will be there faster than you can say 'breach of the peace' Lol! Hats and large sunglasses are the way forward, IMO.

Without our masks, we are at risk from Scilons who i believe are already circling the area,
anon1812 - April 13, 2008 04:21 PM (GMT)
It depends what we're going... Flyering, I think we can do masked... as we'll be in and out of most front gardens before people know we were even there.
Talking face to face, wearing :mask: may not be wise... as lil' ol' ladies are likely to be intimidated, and/or call the police ¬_¬ and we know how clever they are.
Either way, scarfs should be fine, no?

I can see your point, but with regard to the police getting called for something like a group approaching houses wearing masks, believe me - I know what I'm talking about, and I'm not saying how... ;)
Anon1812 - all it takes is one call - the police MUST follow up every report.

My point exactly.

If we're going to do this we may as well just take out an ad in a local paper or get flyers printed off professionally and have flyers with the local rags.

Excellent ideas, there. Do you mean flyers incorporated inside the newspapers as they are delivered, like double glazing leaflets etc? My only worry is that the local newspapers may be more concerned with litigation from the CO$ if they publish anything against them, despite it being an advert or whatever...
Anonylulzz - April 13, 2008 06:03 PM (GMT)
Here's an idea. How about kindly asking 'great big rolls of stickers Anon' to go crazy with a few people in the area - phone booths, post boxes etc...? I have no idea as to the legislation regarding this as I assume it's more civil based than anything else, but I'm sure we'd be okay as the taxi companies have had no probs putting cards/stickers everywhere. Thoughts?
anonuk323 - April 13, 2008 06:07 PM (GMT)
I think putting stickers up everywhere falls foul of flypostering legisation.
Posting the stickers through the door on the other hand is an epic idea, especially if there is a decent quality flyer along with it.

Ah, I think you may be right, my good Anon.
Brum v FlypostersHow about business cards in phone booths, as it's not really in the same league as stickers? Still a good idea about house to house leaflet posting though, but I doubt the local rags will be supportive and at best, they will certainly want payment for putting the leaflets within their deliveries.
anonuk323 - April 13, 2008 06:25 PM (GMT)
Again, I think they fall foul of the same laws. IIRC there was a major push to get rid of the cards in phone booths (although they were for sex lines), the principle is still the same.
It is better IMO to leaflet people houses, and possibly provide a Q&A session somewhere/sometime in moseley, invite local dignitaries and so forth (hopefully get bruce/martin poulter there).
I think that would be the best method here.

I can see where you're coming from, and for the moment, I'd agree and urge all Anon to err on the side of caution pending official confirmation of what we're allowed to do and what we're not. I don't know that many details about the project the CO$ is planning for Moseley, apart from obtaining and renovating a listed building for a new org or something... I understand that emails have been sent to some listed buildings organisation opposing this; can something similar be sent to the council, outlining our objectives/proposals and questioning what we can/can't do?
anon1812 - April 13, 2008 11:37 PM (GMT)
Bearer of Dave's Stickers here... But methinks it would be big littering problem - especially as the glue can be rather a bother to remove.
Accompanying flyers - now there's an idea.
