Title: Masks

Falco - March 4, 2008 07:42 PM (GMT)
Just out of interest, who here is coming in a mask or other type of disguise to these protests? i.e. Is anyone going to be recognisable, as I know there are at a couple of other planned ones?

Oh, and does anyone happen to know of any shops local that actually stock V masks? I was told I'd have to wait 4-6 weeks for my order, so I cancelled it for now.

Anon76 - March 4, 2008 07:51 PM (GMT)
From Dave on the Enturb forums:

so I scored the intertubes and V masks are available at funwarehouse.co.uk for £5, but the postage can be pretty high if you dont change it. I think its about £5 for 3-4 days or £7.50 for next day.
Also if the order is under £18 you dont pay VAT.

Apparently mine has been shipped today

If you go to the forbiddenplanet.co.uk homepage they have a list of their current best selling items.

Any guesses which is the number one item?

Forbidden Planet are out, that's who I had my order with.

And personally, I would prefer not to buy over the internet - i'd rather pop along to a shop and pick one up myself.

Lulz0matic - March 4, 2008 10:36 PM (GMT)

I'd hazard a guess at about 10 minutes max (I walk fairly quickly by the way), haven't actually walked it, so it's a rough estimate based on how far apart i'm remembering them being.

And this sounds good to me, if I haven't got hold of one by then, that'll be my port of call.

anon1812 - March 4, 2008 10:44 PM (GMT)
My sentiments precisely... However I'm willing to bet an auditing course that CO$ will be watching on the day.

TheDudeWhoWearsTheNirvanaShirt - March 4, 2008 10:46 PM (GMT)
google maps says 5 minutes if you drive... So, yeah about 10 mins.

Too true.
It might be possible to get away with it if you're already disguised in some way, maybe an Anon with a mask on could go in and buy others?

Any other suggestions here?

dave - March 4, 2008 10:57 PM (GMT)
There are 2 nerd shops in Brum... Forbidden Planet and Nostalgia and Comics. Might be worth trying both.

anon1812 - March 4, 2008 10:57 PM (GMT)
nah, I reckon your suggestion is good. (to Falco)

Falco - March 4, 2008 10:58 PM (GMT)
I think i've heard of the second one - no idea where it is though. I assume it's in the central area..?

Annoam - March 4, 2008 11:34 PM (GMT)
I think we shud give up on :mask: for now, its a safe bet that they will have any shop that stocks them under observation and its likly on the day they will be interchanging and popping in and out pretending to browse.

Just get a normal mask if you can or Sun Glasses and a Scarf etc otherwise.

anon1812 - March 5, 2008 01:16 PM (GMT)
Nah... I reckon you should just go into the shop :ph43r: 'd. I reckon it'll be fine that way.

Lulz0matic - March 5, 2008 02:44 PM (GMT)
Going in Ninja'd would be fine.

I've already told the manager (Who is a close friend,) that people will possibly be coming in with masks on already. It'll be fine.

Forbidden Planet -

From (Snow Hill bus depot) head down to what once was Virgin Megastores, Oasis Market will be on your left. Turn left, walk forewards; opposite the road is a Tesco's 24/7 or something.

It's by there.

(New Street to Snow Hill is about two minutes walk if you know which corners to cut.)

Nostalgia;

From (New Street Train Station) Walk down the road; you'll pass a Subway, Fair Deal Music is on the opposite side of the road. Keep going.

You'll get to a fourway junction with traffic lights. Pressuming you started on the Train Station side, all you have to do is continue walking forewards across this junction. Nostalgia is the first shop on your right.

Do you know if they have any in stock there?

Lulz0matic - March 5, 2008 04:03 PM (GMT)
Not a clue.

Call them and ask?

I'll pop in and have a look sometime soon, I'm going round as many places as possible in the next few days to distribute YFTC cards, so I can call in any shops that look like they may sell suitable masks as I'm going round.

Soul Intruder - March 5, 2008 10:50 PM (GMT)
On the question of masks, when is a good time to put them on and take them off? I'm getting off at the New Street station, so i thought just as im leaving the train would be alright?

I'll have to shoot off at about 15.20. I'm not sure if the station security will allow me to wear the mask whilst standing in line for the train. I really don't want the $cis to see my face.. so im not sure when i should take the thing off.

Take it off when you get to the station, there were police around last saturday, and the week before, so I'm assuming they're gonna be there for for a few weeks. With security and police around, the $cifags aren't really going to be acting suspiciously or harrassing you, but keep an eye out for anyone that you think has followed you with a camera. Try to take your mask off somewhere less populated, and make sure nobody is looking or watching while you do it.

anon1812 - March 5, 2008 11:34 PM (GMT)
Maybe see if you can get into the lifts alone? Take it off there, then head along the platform and go back up the stairs?

Anon76 - March 5, 2008 11:39 PM (GMT)
I'd say taking it off at the station may not be a good idea as if there are scilons at or around the station then, someone taking off a mask when they get close would be a dead giveaway, and they could easily snap a quick picture without appearing suspicious.

Probably better to take evasive methods to make sure you're not being followed then when you are SURE you are clear, take off the mask and change your appearance as much as possible, a spare jacket, adding or removing a hat, etc.. etc.. would help throw them off the scent.

Soul Intruder - March 5, 2008 11:49 PM (GMT)
Thanks for the advice guys. Im gonna be wearing some shades on the way down, with my mask under my suit (Yes, i will be wearing a suit). Maybe i can make sure im not being followed, duck into a shop before the station and make a quick change.

Lulz0matic - March 6, 2008 12:51 AM (GMT)
I'm thinking shades/flatcap with hair tied back and tucked under for my arrival/exit attire.

Suit with V mask for the protest.

(Of course, this is all hypothetical even now; can't promise my attendance like I can to the West Brom one, should it happen...)

There's a few shops I'm buddy buddy with the staff that I could change in, I suspect.

Annoam - March 6, 2008 01:24 AM (GMT)
All ways remember if all else fails, run around in circles waving your arms. They may just think your a homless looney who got caught up in the protest.

Sorry, its 1:30am and im bored, iill try and avoid humour from now on.

Anyone got a Weather Report for the day yet? May dictate what attire we use

anon1812 - March 6, 2008 01:32 AM (GMT)
Mostly cloudy. Winds from the SW at 20 km/h.
Realfeel®: 9 °C
High: 12 °C

So says accuweather

Forbidden Planet, in Brum - they have masks in. Saw at least 3 on display in there earlier.

Pennon - March 6, 2008 07:54 PM (GMT)
Any chance they will last till this caturday?
Only time I can get up there between now and the event.

Not a clue - only way to find out will be to check I reckon - or phone up and reserve one, use a fake name?

I am not happy.

My mask has still not arrived from ebay.

Displeased 1812 is displeased.

Ask for Jamie and say you're a friend/were refered by Piggy.

He'll know what you mean.
Might get you a discount as well, though I can't promise that.

I now have my mask from funwarehouse.co.uk, came very very quickly.

I still have my order placed with FP and if I get another in the post I shall bring it with me for another anon to wear. If it comes after the protests, I may try and alter it... perhaps widen the mouth hole slightly.

Soul Intruder - March 6, 2008 11:19 PM (GMT)
I was gonna go with this plan...

Arrive at the New Street station, dip in some place quiet and stick the old mask on. Walk out of the station, along the street to the protest. Happy days.

But I've been advised by others that if i go through the station wearing a mask i may get pulled up by the police. So im not sure what to do now, i will be wearing other more friendly face hiders on my way there.

Any thoughts on what is acceptable and what is not?
