Right, I've penned a letter and sent it off which should sort this "cult" debacle once and for all.

RE: The use of the word “Cult” in regards to Anonymous’ protest of Scientology in Birmingham.

Dear Mr Blundell,

I am writing to you to ask your advice regarding a situation that has recently arisen.

As you may be aware, the internet group Anonymous are currently holding regular, worldwide protests against the practices of the Church of Scientology. During the demonstration on 12th May in London, a young protestor was arrested for using the term “Cult” on his sign. His sign read, “Scientology is not a religion it is a dangerous cult.” The police at the demonstration believed this sign to be abusive or insulting and arrested the protestor. On Friday May 23rd, the Crown Prosecution Service notified the protestor that it would not be proceeding with the prosecution.
When the media asked for clarification, a CPS spokesman said: “In consultation with the City of London police, we were asked whether the sign, which read ‘Scientology is not a religion it is a dangerous cult’, was abusive or insulting.
“Our advice is that it is not abusive or insulting and there is no offensiveness, as opposed to criticism, neither in the idea expressed nor in the mode of expression. No action will be taken against the individual.”

On Wednesday 28th May, a small group of protestors in Birmingham were informed by a Police Officer that if they were to use the term “Cult” on their signs at the next protest (scheduled for June 14th at Ethel Street, Birmingham) then the offenders would be arrested.

I would be very grateful if you could provide clarification in writing from your department that members of Anonymous will not be prosecuted for their signs containing this term. Anonymous can then show this letter to any Police Officer who believes that an Anonymous protestor has committed a crime.

Please be assured that Anonymous understands the difference between opinion and threatening behaviour and any signs that are deemed abusive or insulting will be removed by our own moderation or our protest marshals.

Thank you for your help in this matter.

Yours sincerely,
