Title: Getting in Contact with the Media

BritFagATDI - February 28, 2008 08:53 PM (GMT)
What attempts have people made?

ITV is probably our best bet as they covered the story before. I have their number, but I'm not sure if I should post it up (not hard to find anyway) but I think it would be bad if they got loads of phone calls about it. One would surfice. (Or would lots be a good idea to get their attention?)

EDIT:

I think it would be best to contact all the places one week before the protest, so I'll make a list (least us all forget!)

Metro - 020 7651 5200
ITV Central - 0808 1007 888
BBC Midlands -
Birmingham Mail -

go for it dude, the more attention the better, if we all got televised it would be great!

Falco - February 28, 2008 10:07 PM (GMT)
To be honest, I think it might be an idea to wait a day or two, to give all the Brum Anons time to register here (if they choose to come). After that, go for the group majority, instead of just a few of us making any decisions now.

We where televised last time, by ITV, although it was extremely short:

Although it was deceptive as they took this interview but never used it:

I'd be happy to contact BBC Midlands Today, I've got their phone number. The more TV coverage the better. If we tell them that Central covered it last time they may feel they missed out on a story that their rivals got.

ITV Central may well come again - but please give extra emphasis to the point that we are not protesting against the BELIEFS of the CoS. It really annoyed me last time when the presenter completely missed the point of the protest in her opening statement.

Its bad enough theres a anti-war rally going on the same day. Maybe the BBC might be a good idea because they don't like to criticise the government too often.

Good point, we should get a consensus of opinion first.

It's probably best to make any contact closer to the date anyway so they don't just jot a note in the margin of their diary and forget all about it.

Aye. But I also feel it will allow the News Readers to link the stories easily, even if we are an after thought, it's better than nothing.

If they roll from the anti-war protest on to us, it's an easy link for them and they might be more inclided to fo it.

Yes, it needs to be stated clearly that it's the organisation not the church that is being protested.

In fact, when I phone them, I'll refer to their last report and say that we would be greatful if they could correct the mistake and make a point of it.

What about local newspapers like the Birmingham Mail or the Metro? Metro would be great due to its large distribution.

Agreed, the Metro would be great. If anyone does a letter to local news, post it up here? I can adapt it if necessary and drop it into the Express and Star offices.

algy - February 28, 2008 10:25 PM (GMT)
i think we should just give as many media outlets as possible a try, surely the more attention anon receives the better! the more publicity there is the stronger the group will grow

The Metro is a national paper, and covered the story last time, so they are definatly worth a buzz.

From the Metro last time:

At the protest if we could get all the ppl at the protest to text in to a radio station in the space of a few minutes, imagine that, the DJ receives 100+ texts all at once?

SovietV on the Manchester board at enturbulation suggested this... maybe it would be a good idea?

It might work actually. 100+ texts, all saying exactly the same thing, all recieved at about the same time - bound to generate some interest.

Anon76 - February 28, 2008 10:40 PM (GMT)
Another company it might be worth contacting is Independent Radio News.

They provide the news segments for most of the UK independent radio stations.

it's not really possible to ignore a group of masked protesters marching up and down the high street, surely it'll be quite a big story for news and radio, everyone should try and get in contact with one station at least

Do we ask for permission to put fliers up on college bulletin boards

algy - February 28, 2008 11:50 PM (GMT)
i did, they usually don't care as long as it's not very offensive, OR if you have a load of scifiologists in your college/school

What about Express and Star, local paper all ways after something big to cover. Would beat the usual "Those damn kids tried to hit me on there bikes, walking at a slow pace on the other side of the road".

Maybe on second thought no, i can see the headlines "Masked protestors threatern old lady 6 miles away with there loud shouting".

Still, i know i said this a lot on Enturb but it may be worth if nothing more having a small statement to read if any of us are asked about the protest.

Ive done this sort of thing before with various political partys (wont say who, but there in power at the moment). Nothing ruins a campaign more than when the campaigners know nothing about which they are talking about. Unless your magical (ill give Blair that, he had a gift for the old talking if nothing else) you simply come accross as a moron and you make the group as a whole look bad.

Could anyone getting in touch with the media please send them through this press release - there will be further, more detailed, press packs available on the day but this gives them all they need to know:

To whom it may concern,

You may be aware that on Sunday the 10th of February there was a worldwide protest against the Church of Scientology (CoS) staged by a group known as ‘Anonymous’. Over 280 separate events were planned with estimates of over 8,000 people attending. Videos can be found all over the internet and many television stations, newspapers and websites picked up the story.

You might be interested to know that there is a second such worldwide event being planned for Saturday the 15th of March, with protests in the UK occurring in London, Birmingham, Manchester, Plymouth, Edinburgh, York, Brighton, Sunderland, Bournemouth, Edinburgh and Dublin. Most of these protests will begin at 11am, though if Sunday’s events are anything to go by they most likely wont be in full swing until about 12.30.

These protests are entirely peaceful and designed to increase public awareness of the various unethical practices of the CoS, while simultaneously demonstrating public support for any members of the Church who are too afraid to leave. For reasons of personal safety many members of Anonymous will be wearing masks or disguises on the day so that they cannot be tracked down by CoS after the event (a quick internet search for the term ‘Fair Game Policy’ might give you some idea of why this is so important).

In their press statement issued on the 10th of February (which, incidentally, was the exact same statement issued from their offices all over the world) the Co$ called Anonymous ‘religious bigots’ and ‘terrorists’ – something which I’m sure anyone who viewed the protests that day will firmly deny. Anonymous is completely for free speech and freedom of religion – this is precisely the reason why these protests are taking place. The CoS has also publicly claimed that Anonymous members are all required to read ‘Mein Kampf’ and ‘The Communist Manifesto’ – this is completely untrue and such blatant scaremongering is, for want of a better word, laughable.

While no one person can speak for Anonymous I am sure that any reporter you decide to send to the protests on the 15th of March will be made very welcome by Anonymous and members will do their best to find someone knowledgeable who is willing to give an interview. There should also be a few ex-CoS members in attendance.

In the meantime you might wish to take a look at http://www.enturbulation.org. This is the website from these protests are being planned and there is a specific section on the forum dedicated to questions from the press. Anonymous has no leader – it is simply a collection of individuals who happen to be supporting the same cause – and as such you will, unfortunately, be unable to find one person to speak directly for the group. However, some people may be willing to give interviews, or point you in the direction of specific information. Despite what the CoS would have the media believe, Anonymous members are not ‘hackers’ and ‘criminals’ – in fact any one posting messages suggesting such activities are banned from the site.

All the best and Anonymous looks forward to making your acquaintance on Saturday the 15th of March.
