QUOTE

Dear PC McCormack,

This email is a formal written notice of our intent to conduct a peaceful protest against the Church of Scientology on Saturday the 16th of August 2008, part of a worldwide protest taking part that day. The protest will take place outside the Church of Scientology on Ethel Street and New Street near the junction with Ethel Street. The protest will begin at 11am and should end before 5pm. There will be an estimated 60 people attending, though we have no way of knowing exact numbers until the day itself, numbers are likely to be similar to recent protests.

This will be an entirely peaceful protest, There will be some chanting and singing, and the handing out of leaflets. Please note that we have now had confirmation form Birmingham City Council that handing out leaflets for the purpose of our protests is acceptable under the Free Literature Consent Scheme.

It is important to note that this protest is not against individual Scientologists or their beliefs but the organisation of the Church of Scientology and it's unethical practices.Because of various well-documented practices of the Church of Scientology aimed at harassing and intimidating all critics of their organisation, many members of the protest will be wearing masks on the day.

We will do all we can to ensure that the event runs smoothly and causes minimal disruption to the public and local businesses. There will be three or four stewards on the day wearing high-visibility vests to ensure that they are easily identifiable to the police.  We hope that our conduct during the previous protests will be taken into account when planning your response for the 16th August 2008.

During some of the earlier protests we have had a march from Ethel Street to the Bullring and we would like to request permission to repeat this on Sat 16th August. Ideally we would like this to take place between 12pm and 2pm at a time that is convenient for the Police on the day. We estimate that the duration of this march would be between 15 and 20 minutes for the return march. Our stewards wearing high visibility vests will assist in keeping everyone together and to minimise any disruption to pedestrians.

If you have any questions you would like us to answer or any advice for the protesters between now and the protest then please just let me know and we will respond as soon as possible.

We look forward to your response and assure you of our co-operation once again on August 16th.

Yours Sincerely
......

If this is the case, I don't think we'll be allowed to march. IIRC the protest in april was the same day as a Brum home game, and the duty inspector refused our request to march.
Although we are giving them a huge amount of notice this time, I don't think we'll be able to march. :(

In that case why bother asking? The police have stopped anti CoS protest down ethel street in the past (2004), why do we bother protesting when we could get stopped?

Don't ask don't get.

I'm not saying don't ask. I'm pointing out that the previous time there was a footy match on in Brum, we weren't allowed to march.
I'm hopeful we will get permission, but I'm not gonna put money on it. :)

There's a game on pretty much every saturday during the season, villa or blues at home.

It'll make little difference unless theres a chance of trouble, our chances are better now that blues are in a different division to villa, though there are rival games with wolves and cov this season.

And March and Feb you marched and there were home games on then.
