Title: All aboard the Atheist bus!

Anon76 - October 22, 2008 06:34 PM (GMT)
There is a new campaign to get atheist adverts on London buses.

The campaign was launched yesterday (21st October) and aimed to raise £5,500 to get ads on 30 buses for 1 month. Richard Dawkins agreed to match the £5,500 from his own pocket.

The target was vastly exceeded and now stands at over £73,000 meaning the ads may go nationwide.

Errrm, what? They're trying to get people to be atheist... why? IMO, this just seems like an absolute waste of money. They're advertising that people shouldn't believe in God? I still can't get that round my head.

Expect the same religious dicks that stopped city centres saying Merry Christmas will stop these adverts.

I'd assume it's in response to all of the "Alpha.org" ads that have been around, which is trying to get people to become Christian (quick glance at the site, all about God, one of the ads states "What would you ask God" etc). If you can advertise for belief in a God, then you can also advertise for the belief that there is no God.

It is a response to all the Christian adverts on buses including the "alpha course".

The idea is to raise awareness of the atheist viewpoint and reassure atheists that they are not alone rather than to convert anyone, but if it gets people thinking about the issue and questioning their faith, then that's a bonus.

The current total of donations is now over £90,000 so the ads may be rolled out nationwide.
