Title: Masks and disguise
Description: I cannot stress this enough

Lolita Protestor - March 17, 2008 09:40 PM (GMT)
On Saturday, a great deal of people turned up either in full, or half masks.

This was epic win.

However, i did notice a few people who either had NO mask or wore their masks only 45% of the time. A few were walking around with scalves half pulled around their neck.

Scalves are a good mask, providing they cover half your voice all the time

I'm not shit fitting here, but if the sci-fags notice you un-masked, it takes ONE shot of you while you take a sip of coke, or breathe for them to get your picture.

A pack of 5 dust masks costs as little as 1.50 from your hardware store, chip in 30p between you and you have some protection for the day.

Please, take this seriously. I don't want any anons getting sci-fagged.

III - March 17, 2008 09:54 PM (GMT)
well, it's a risk that each anon can decide whether to take.

I think that we definitely need an introductory sheet to have on here and send to people thinking of turning up (someone mentioned one elsewhere, forget where), and that can include the reasons we wear masks and the strong recommendation that everyone does.

it's not quite as clearcut as: they see your face, they take a photo -> fair game.
they need to match the photo to a name, and then they've got some work to do to get from your name to other info.

how dangerous it is for you to be unmasked depends on how visible info on you is. if you're a namefag elsewhere on the internet, with photos and real info, then you should most definitely wear a mask (unless you're an idiot and wanting to take the CoS on in their favourite field).
if the only info on you that is out there is stuff the government has and maybe the electoral role, then it isn't too dangerous to not wear a mask (but you should still, or at least alter your appearance for each protest, you don't want them to have too good a file on your known behaviour).

the only thing that everyone has to worry about is being followed home. masks aren't completely necessary to stop that, just some sort of change between you-at-protest and you-after-protest, or general evasion tactics.

tl;dr: wear masks, silly people.
however if you don't want to wear a mask, make sure you understand the risks, and be rational and decide whether it's worth the risk.

Soul Intruder - March 17, 2008 10:03 PM (GMT)
I'll be honest with you.

I'm not scared of $cientologists. I had a good 3 years of my life ruined by being afraid of people. I changed. Took a long time, but i changed.

So i did lift my mask to the top of my head from time to time on the 15th. I wear the mask because to me it resembles the image of Anonymous. I'm planning to buy another mask so i can chop it up and turn it into a half mask. (Gonna have it under a normal V mask so i may lift it up)

Enturb and here is the only place i go by the name of Soul Intruder (Bruce Dickinson song, just scrolled down my iTunes list till i found a KICK ASS song...). I have a facebook account, that i've not been on in a good many months. And that's it.

I believe it is up to a member if they wish to mask up or not. That's fine, but as III said, every Anon must understand the risks.

Lulz0matic - March 17, 2008 10:36 PM (GMT)
Soul Intruder isn't as good as Devil on a Hog from the same album... ;)

Hahaha... i'll agree.

I don't wanna go OT here... but that album.. for me... FREAKIN OWNED!

[EDIT]: HI, I'M BARRY SCOTT!!! FED UP OF A FACEBOOK PAGE THAT YOU NEVER USE? WELL JUST PRESS DEACTIVATE AND BANG THE PAGE IS GONE!!

(Guess what i just did) B)

J.B. - March 17, 2008 11:52 PM (GMT)
I don't think that this is likely to happen in Brum, but at the L.A. protest, two scientologists were walking around with V masks on and were holding signs with personal information and pictures of a few of the protestors there. They also threatened one of the individuals whose information was displayed. It was reported to the police, but they couldn't do anything because it was free speech, so the protestors had to hide their signs with their own.

I know it probably seems like it won't happen or it's unimportant but we can't be sure, so FOR FUCK'S SAKE COVER YOUR FACE!

co$play - March 18, 2008 09:23 AM (GMT)
Sunglasses do the job just fine for me. I have a scarf around my face when I think I'm being snapped/video'd, etc - but for the better part, I seriously doubt that I could be identified, if the almighty Co$ genuinely sees one out of a hundred or so protesters as a priority threat.

Just in case, though, I wear my hair differently. ^^

EDIT: Masks are a yay/nay. I think if you plan to turn up with the intention of handing out flyers, wear a scarf and sunglasses. If you turn up to lol, then wear a V mask, or something along those lines. The former encourages conversation with the public; the latter makes us look more unified and emphasise the 'anonymous' ideal we subscribe to.

Well, with umbrella dude (i think i know who you are on here, but sci-fags are lurking) people were more than happy to speak to him for long periods of time.

That and someone actually asked me what we were doing, i was so taken a back i gave a speech punctuated by 'ooh' and 'uhm' and he just smiled and said thanks for the advice,

anon1812 - March 18, 2008 04:15 PM (GMT)
I don't find my mask inhibited people from talking to me... I did speak to quite a few people, Explaining fairgame, freakout, Lisa, and occasionally CCHR, etc... most people seemed happy talking to me. The Umms and Errs may not have helped with the clarity... but there we go.

One nice (Possibly Hippie) couple had quite a long chat with me.

Lolita Protestor - March 18, 2008 04:40 PM (GMT)
And people who recognize the mask will be naturally intrigued, and therefore more friendly and open to discussion

To be fair to Mr Obvious Cult (Thats your new name), i spent a large majoroity of the day chatting with Mr Obvious Cult. as it seemed like i hadnt brought friends and he hadnt and he had a sign and i had Flyers/Stickers.

Though we avoided subjects of identity we still had a good chat about all sorts and i had no toruble understanding him and when people asked us questions, they seemed to have no trouble either understanding him and because i had a disguise underneath i could take of my dust mask and chat as well.

I think confidence is a problem with things like this, if your not confident in what your talking about then it shows in your voice.

LegionsOfOne - March 22, 2008 04:17 PM (GMT)
i found a good combination in the bandanna under the mask stopped me drowning in my own respiration - and oasis seems the place to go for bandannas, blue bananna was serverly lacking in anything useful for hiding your identity - aside from nifty hats.

bandannas from oasis are from £1 to £2, I have word forbidden planet is having a shipment of V masks but alas still haven't had time to run into nostalgia and ask.

edit: i found tipping your mask slightly made people approach you more willingly. just saying

Last time I turned up in normal clothes, but everyone was wearing suits >< What should a girl wear? Not that suits are only for males, but anything more appropriate possible?

Falco - March 23, 2008 04:33 PM (GMT)
You can get suits that are made to be worn by women, if you want one. There were a couple of people wearing them at the last protest. Failing that, just go for something fairly smart in attire.

I'll wear a blouse with a black tie and a blazer. Sorted then.
I didn't see many women, but I guess I was okay since I was wearing a mask and a coat, no-one could tell the difference

The best idea is if you think you are being tailed, go to a shop, and browse, if they are tailing you, they'll either follow you, or wait around the entrance. If you are, head to a police station and tell them
